Using your Australian Disability Parking Permit

Rights

An Australian Disability Parking Permit entitles you to use easy access parking bays, including: on-street parking, shopping ACROD parking street signcentres, hospitals, libraries, and schools. Refer to local councils for information on availability of concessions.

The APP, administered under National Disability Services WA, is responsible under legislation - Uniform General Regulations (Parking for Disabled Persons) 1988 - to issue parking permits to people with mobility limitations.

Responsibilities of Permit Holders Return to top

Generally, easy access parking bays are very limited and only one parking bay in every one hundred is designated as an easy access parking bay. Given the high demand, it is important that the easy access bays are used responsibly. To support this, it is critical that the bays are only used with a permit. The issuing of permits is undertaken after a careful assessment process.

When using your permit you must ensure it is clearly displayed inside the windscreen of the vehicle. Rangers and Parking Inspectors identify your vehicle by the Australian Disability Parking Permit and expiry date. If the permit is not clearly displayed, you may receive a fine.

The number of permits issued to people with mobility restrictions is increasing, creating a shortage of available parking bays. To use the easy access bays responsibly and courteously means:Lady using crutches opening a vehicle that is parked in an ACROD parking bay

  • using the bays only when the permit holder is travelling in the vehicle;
  • do not use the bays if the permit holder is not leaving the vehicle;
  • leaving wider bays available for people using wheelchairs, walking frames, crutches etc; and
  • display permit clearly inside the windscreen to allow rangers and parking inspectors to identify the vehicle by the permit number and expiry date.

Some important things we want you to remember about parking:

If you see someone parking in easy-access bays without an ACROD permit, we advise you to notify the local council or the shopping centre management at the time.

We advise you not to approach people misusing easy-access bays to avoid an unsafe and confrontational situation.

Placing leaflets or notes on any vehicle contravenes the Western Australian Litter Act 1979.

Not all permit holders have a visible disability, many conditions and impairments will be hidden – please respect other permit holders.
